Giacomo Montagna – Who am I and why did I choose to focus my clinical and research activity on breast cancer?

I’m glad to share with you the letter of my colleague Giacomo Montagna MD:
Dear all
I would like to start this short post by introducing myself. My name is Giacomo Montagna and I am Swiss breast surgeon. In 2011 I started my residency in Ob-Gyn in Lugano, Ticino, where I had the chance to meet and work with Prof. Olivia Pagani. My interest in the care of breast cancer (BC) patients and oncoplastic surgery began very quickly. In 2016, in order to improve my surgical skills, I moved to the University Hospital of Basel, where I am currently working under the supervision of Prof. Walter Weber. Later this year I will join the Breast Service of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York for a 1-year research fellowship.Giacomo Montagna Naples Late Spring Interactive Course 2019 GRETA ONCOPLASTIC MILANO NAPOLI CATANIA
My interest in the multidisciplinary treatment of BC, motivated me in taking part in the second cohort of the Certificate of Competence in Breast Cancer (CCB2), a Certificate in Advanced Studies organized by the European School of Oncology and the University of Ulm (Germany). I met Nicola exactly two years ago, during the first CCB2 seminar, in Vienna. We were both eager to learn more about this multifaceted disease, and had many ideas that we wanted to develop. Soon it became clear that this was the beginning of a long-term friendship and of a very productive collaboration.
Giuseppe and I met for the first time in March 2018 in Basel at the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC) Consensus Conference on Nipple Sparing Mastectomy. At the time G.Re.T.A was launching its first course, the Etna Late Spring interactive course, in Giarre Sicily, I could not miss this opportunity and joined their brilliant initiative.
Rarely I have attended such an interactive and fruitful meeting. Along with an extraordinary review of the current literature on the de-escalation of breast and axillary surgery, I had the opportunity to meet many international experts in the field and many colleagues from all over Europe.
Oncology is a fast evolving, fascinating discipline and surgeons sometime struggle to stay update with all that’s happening in the field, I am thrilled to join the Naples late spring interactive course…see you in Naples.
