Edoardo Mattone – Etna Late Spring Interactive Course 2018

I’m very happy to share with you the letter of my colleague Edoardo Mattone MD:

First and foremost, I am absolutely thrilled to be taking part in such an important event. I am sure that this course will give me the chance to increase my knowledge regarding oncoplastic surgery, as well as honing my current skills.
I started my surgical experience after graduating from general surgery and meeting Giuseppe on September 2017. He shared with me his passion and showed me everything there was to know about oncoplastic breast surgery. Furthermore, he gave me the opportunity to challenge myself through oncological aspects of breast cancer treatment which I had never done in the past.

Edoardo Mattone MD

As I was studying to become a doctor, it became more evident that I wanted to help people get through a particularly difficult period: cancer surgery and treatment. Senology is an extremely delicate branch of surgery for women because it is closely related to their gender identity. For many women, breast surgery represents an attack on their femininity and breast modification could potentially change their self-perception, reduce their self-esteem, and have a negative effect on their relationships and sexual lives.
Nowadays the role of the breast surgeon is different from the one of the general surgeon, not only because of different surgical techniques and pre-operative surgical planning, but also because of the approach with the patients. There is a strong sense of duty for the breast surgeons to reassure their patients to remain calm and confident throughout the whole process. What I find extremely important is the relationship that doctors develop with their patients. This relationship involves constant collaboration, as well as a collective effort in the search for the best solution in order to provide the patient with successful oncological outcome, as well as positive cosmetic results.
I’m really looking forward to attending the Etna Course as I believe it will give me the chance to look at things in a different way. I am sure it will be a meaningful and purposeful professional development session.
Enjoy your stay in Sicily.
See you in May,
Edoardo.
