Alessio is one of the first to subscribe our Etna Late Spring Interactive Course 2018. I think he perfectly represents our view regarding our profession in a way that I could never do:

“Privilege. I feel that this is the best word to describe my outlook on a career in breast surgery. Certainly other words would complete the description, such as challenging, passionate, fulfilling, and even at times, tiring and consuming. Still, the word privilege is what comes first.
In particular, the holistic approach to patients with breast diseases is what makes this job unique and extremely rewarding, and it is from this that my sense of privilege has been fostered.
The long journey from mutilating mastectomy to oncoplastic surgery is for me an enthralling adventure towards a new era in breast surgery. It is an ultimate sense of satisfaction to be able to offer someone a treatment that is not only life-saving or life-prolonging, but also respectful of the utmost beauty of the feminine body.
Most women diagnosed with breast cancer can look forward to a long, healthy life after their breast cancer diagnosis. Hence, it is more important than ever to offer them a treatment option that preserves their quality of life and their sense of attractiveness and femininity.
I had the honour and pleasure to meet the founders of G.RE.T.A. at the last MBN Oncoplastic meeting in Milan. The dedication of the meeting’s organisers has struck me as extraordinary. G.RE.T.A. is the ideal educational platform for all surgeons and surgical trainees with a specific interest and commitment in breast surgery, and oncoplastic approach. As participant of the next Etna Interactive Course, I expect to share the intellectual and technical abilities of the utmost European experts in the field of breast disease. I am looking forward to being a scholar in a sort of modern version of surgical art apprenticeship, where mentors and mentees interact and support each other. The meeting will also be an invaluable opportunity to create a network of highly motivated, research oriented clinicians, who share the common professional interest in breast disease.
Last but not least, I am excited by the chance to live and explore Sicily, and enjoy its stunning sceneries.
